At the beginning of January I got a package from HIPPEAS that allowed me to try most of the flavors out in stores. I had tried HIPPEAS a couple of times (when I wanted something to snack on with my coffee), but only one flavor. My review was that they were a great snack to grab when there was nothing else around, but I hadn’t purchased any to keep around the house at the time. Now I can’t put them down!
So, what are HIPPEAS?! HIPPEAS are Organic Chickpea Puffs. They are certified USDA Organic, Gluten Free, Vegan, None, Kosher, and contain No Nuts or Soy. They are also baked, low in calories, and full of plant protein and fiber. In addition to being a great snack for people with a variety of diets, HIPPEAS supports the charity Farm Africa.
The box I received was filled with Vegan White Cheddar, Sriracha Sunrise, Far Out Fajita, Pepper Power, and Bohemian BBQ. Here’s my review of the flavors, starting with my favorite:
Vegan White Cheddar
This was by far my favorite flavor! I am a Cheetos lover and have not been able to find a comparable replacement since going vegan. I have searched far and wide and nothing has compared. I even ordered a bag of UK Flaming Hot Cheetos Puffs (yes, the UK gets vegan Cheetos), but they had a weird sour flavor and were not what I remembered Cheetos tasting like at all! These White Cheddar puffs were spot on. The flavoring was perfect and it didn’t overwhelm me like lots of other cheese flavored snacks.
Ingredients: Chickpea Flour, Rice Flour, Sunflower Oil, Tapioca Starch, Brown Rice Flour, Salt, Sugar, Onion Powder, Citric Acid, Garlic Powder, Rice Concentrate, Lactic Acid, Canola Oil, Natural Flavor, and Organic Pea Hull Fiber.
I love Sriracha. I am the person that puts Sriracha on everything! The Sriracha sunrise flavor was just that. Enough Sriracha to wake up your taste buds, but I wouldn’t say they were spicy. The flavor on these was a bit stronger than the vegan cheddar so one serving at a time was definitely enough, but that serving tasted great!
Ingredients: Chickpea Flour, Rice Flour, Sunflower Oil, Tapioca Starch, Sugar, Salt, White Vinegar Powder, Chili Powder, Garlic Powder, Jalapeno Powder, Rice Concentrate, Paprika Extract, Yeast Extract, Natural Flavor, Organic Pea Hull Fiber
Bohemian BBQI am always a fan of the classic BBQ flavor. This BBQ puff definitely had a smoky flavor, just the way I like my BBQ. It took me a second to get used to the fact that I was eating a puff and not a potato chip (I’m a bit weird about texture guys), but after I did I could eat these all day!

Far Out Fajita
When it comes to snack foods I typically tend to stick with traditional or spicy flavors. Before going vegan I never tried the Lays “Do Us a Flavor” chips because, well, Biscuits and Gravy or Chicken and Waffles as a chip just seems weird to me. The flavor of the Far Out Fajita puffs were great (my husband actually chose these as his second favorite), but I just couldn’t get over the fact that my HIPPEAS tasted like fajita.
Ingredients: Chickpea Flour, Rice Flour, Sunflower Oil, Tapioca Starch, Salt, Garlic Powder, Chili Powder, Sugar, Dextrose, Onion Powder, Spice, Citric Acid, Paprika Extract, Yeast Extract, Organic Pea Hull Fiber.
My opinion on Pepper Power is purely based on my personal preferences. I love pepper as a seasoning mixed with other flavors, but I have never been a fan of strictly peppered flavored snacks. I usually take a hard pass on salt and pepper chips. This probably wouldn’t be a flavor that I would purchase, but my roommate ate these out of my box and loved them!
Ingredients: Chickpea Flour, Rice Flour, Sunflower Oil, Tapioca Starch, Brown Rice Flour, Sea Salt, Black Pepper, Onion Powder, Garlic Powder, Sunflower Oil, Jalapeno Powder, Organic Pea Hull Fiber.
If you are looking for a snack that’s vegan, packs a punch of afternoon protein, and tastes like a chip (but is actually much healthier) I highly recommend trying HIPPEAS! They can be purchased at Whole Foods, Safeway, Kroger, Wegmans, Stop & Shop, VONS, Jewel-Osco, Shop Rite, Central Market, Amazon, and Starbucks. Starbucks is typically lacking in vegan snack and food items (although they did recently add a whole grain bagel and guacamole that are vegan), so this is a great option if you want a snack with your coffee. I have also seen HIPPEAS popping up in Costco so go check out their social media to see if they are near you (I hear you can build a pick your own multi-pack).
Have you tried HIPPEAS? What flavor is your favorite? Let me know in the comments.
